More than one in ten motorists (13%) who were arrested for drink-driving last year were caught between 5am and 12 noon, according to new statistics.
The startling figure was revealed after a Freedom of Information request by Autoglass® to Britain’s 43 police forces. There were a total of 39,259 arrests in 2011 in the 26 constabularies that responded to the enquiry, with 5,049 of those taking place in the seven hours up to midday.
The largest number of motorists arrested for drink-driving came in the Metropolitan Police area with 10,411 and of those, 1,191 were caught between 5am-12 midday – 11.4%. The force with the lowest number was the City of London on 155 with 22 – 14% - falling foul of the law in that time period.
The largest percentage of motorists arrested between 5am-12 noon came in the West Mercia covering Shropshire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire, with 1,031 cases out of 1,886 – 55%. The lowest number of drivers seized between 5am-12 noon was in Cambridgeshire where 20 out of 240 – or 8.3% were arrested.
Other research released in December revealed the proportion of morning-after drink-drive accidents had reached a record high. The figures from the Association of Chief Police Officers show 18.2% of all accidents caused by drink-driving in 2010 occurred between 5am and 1pm, compared with only 11.4% in 2000 and 6.9% in 1990.
