Five years for death caused by driving while drunk

A nurse who left a 15-year-old boy dying in the road after hitting him with her car when under the influence of alcohol, has been sentenced to five years in prison, reported the Telegraph this week.

On 6th September 2012 at around 8.50 pm, Sam Brown was riding his bicycle home when he was struck by Heather Butler’s car. Ms Butler was on her way to work at a nursing home and although she stopped to remove Sam’s bicycle from the front of the car she did not offer him any assistance, says the Telegraph. She also failed to notify the police of the incident.

When she arrived at work she told a colleague that she thought she had hit a cyclist.

Hull Crown Court was informed that Ms Butler had drunk a glass of wine and three gin and tonics before getting into her car and driving. She was found to have been two and half times the legal alcohol limit.

Ms Butler pled guilty to charges of causing death by careless driving whilst over the prescribed alcohol limit, failing to stop and failing to report the accident.
