Fine for speeding near school

A 44-year-old Aberdeen man has been fined after being convicted for speeding near a school last year, according to a report from Police Scotland.

He received 5 penalty points on his driving licence and a fine of £180 for the offence. He was caught driving at a speed of 52 mph in the 30 mph zone.

“Hopefully the result of this person being caught speeding will deter other motorists in the area and will act as an example of the outcome of an incident like this,” said PC Simon Lewis-Dalby, who was involved in the operation, run last August by the Rosemount Community Policing Team. “This incident was especially dangerous as it was right beside a school and thankfully nobody was hurt.”

Speeding is the most common driving offence in Scotland and the rest of the UK. The fact that it is a common traffic offence does not make the effect of being convicted for speeding any less serious. The courts have the discretion to disqualify for speeding and are more likely to do so under the 'totting up' provisions for multiple offences within a three year period.

Like most offences, speeding must be proved using technical evidence and the procedures involved must be accurate.
