Disqualified driver sentenced to 10 years

A 38-year-old man has been jailed for 10 years and six months after pleading guilty to causing the deaths of two cyclists by dangerous driving, according to the Guardian. He also received a lifelong driving ban.

On 27th January husband and wife Ross and Clare Simons were cycling on their tandem when they were struck by Nicky Lovell who was, at the time, banned from driving.

Lovell, who reportedly has 69 previous convictions, had been spotted driving by a police officer who was investigating another matter. PC Philip Busvine knew that Lovell had been banned from driving and followed him, indicating that he should pull over.

Lovell refused to pull over and drove off at speed, followed by the police. It was alleged that Lovell was driving at speeds of 50-60mph when he collided with a stationary vehicle, sending his car hurtling into the couple.

Mr and Mrs Simons were so badly hurt that they died at the scene.
