Under new plans by the Crown Office, sectarian hate crimes in Scotland could be punishable by custodial sentences of up to five years instead of six months.

One of the main reasons for such proposals is the growing sectarianism between rival football firm supporters such as those of Rangers and Celtic, otherwise known as the ‘Old Firm’.

Capturing crimes such as football-related breaches of the peace crimes, the extension to the maximum jail sentence will be ten-fold. It will, therefore, be even more important that the best possible criminal defence representation is obtained to ensure that those accused of hate crimes receive a fair trial.
